Effect of a Nutritional Intervention on the Intestinal Microbiota of Vertically HIV-infected Children

The gut microbiota seems to exert a critical influence in the immune system and likely influences bacterial translocation and systemic inflammation. The gut microbiota of HIV-infected children, whose immune system has evolved in the presence of the virus, remains unexplored. We aimed to characterize the fecal microbiota in vertically HIV-infected children and to explore the effects of its modulation with a symbiotic nutritional intervention.
