Exploring genetic, epigenetic and environmental determinants of glycaemic control in children and young individuals with type 1 diabetes

The primary goal of the study is to investigate the relationship between oral microbiota composition and local immune response in children and young adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D). By combining 16S rRNA gene targeted sequencing with multiplex cytokine analysis, the study aims to identify microbial and inflammatory signatures associated with T1D, a chronic autoimmune condition known to increase susceptibility to oral inflammatory diseases. Our results underscore the relevance of oral microbial-immune interactions in T1D and support the potential role of the oral cavity as a site for monitoring and possibly modulating systemic inflammation in autoimmune diseases.
