Schizophrenia (SZ) is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder, and its etiology and pathogenesis remain largely unknown. Mounting preclinical and clinical evidence suggest that the gut microbiome is a vital player in SZ. However, the gut microbiota characteristics as well as its host response in elderly SZ patients are not well understood.
