An Exploration of Mathematics Talent Development in Australia

Concerns have been raised in Australia about the performance and progress of school students in mathematics, particularly those with high potential. This study involved interviews with leaders of six mathematics programs, three students, and a national online questionnaire completed by 277 parents about 298 children. Findings from these groups were triangulated to explore mathematics learning experiences, their impacts and challenges. Based on the findings, several strategies were proposed and combined into a practical framework designed to guide school leaders, teachers, and parents in systematically developing the mathematics talent of high-potential students across both school and non-school settings.
