Within the Drepanosiphum genus, pseudogenisation of the biotin and riboflavin biosynthetic genes in the Drepanosiphum platanoidis' lineage Buchnera last common ancestor rendered Buchnera unable to supply these essential nutrients to the aphid, and thus triggered the establishment of a secondary co-obligate endosymbiont. Through whole-genome sequencing, we determined that Drepanosiphum platanoidis harbours a Sodalis-like symbiont as Buchnera's co-obligate endosymbiont. This population of Drepanosiphum platanoidis was also found to be infected by a facultative Hamiltonella defensa symbiont and its associated APSE phage.
