DNA was isolated from an isofemale line of Acyrthosiphon kondoi (blue alfalfa aphid). Buchnera aphidicola is a ancient, obligate, maternally transmitted, nutritional endosymbiont of aphids. Aphids and Buchnera cooperate in the biosynthesis of essential amino acids which are lacking in the aphid diet of plant phloem sap.
