This series comprises registers of deaths recorded by the Deputy Registrars assigned to various districts throughout Victoria. Details captured for each death include: Registration Number When and where died Name and profession Sex and Age Cause of death / Duration of last illness / Medical attendant by whom certified / and when attendant last saw deceased Name and profession of father Signature, description and residence of informant Signature of Deputy Registrar / date / where registered If Burial registered: when and where buried, name of undertaker, name and religion of minister, names of witnesses of burial Where born or how long in Australian Colonies If deceased was married: where, at what age, to whom, issue (children) in order of birth (names and ages) Compulsory registration of deaths was first legislated by the Births, Deaths and Marriages Act (Act 16 Vic., No.26) in 1853. Responsibility for registration in regional areas was delegated to Deputy Registrars assigned to each district. In 1959, the regional registration offices were abolished and the registration of deaths were centralised. See VPRS 8340 for Death Registrations after 1960. The P0001 consignment contains records delivered to PROV by a member of the public in September 2013. The C1 consignment contains records received from the East Gippsland Historical Society Inc in January 2024.
