Chilean Galls Inventory (2026)

A general inventory of galls in Chile, which describes the system (the host plant family and species, as well as the finest taxonomic resolution available for the gall-inducing insect), the life form of the host plant, its conservation status according to the Herbario Digital (Rodriguez et al., 2018), the morphology of the gall and the specific plant organ affected, the general location where the system was found, whether it occurs in countries outside of Chile, the author who described or discovered the gall, the year of publication, and whether additional records of the same system have appeared in subsequent publications. Given the information gap regarding the study system in Chile—specifically concerning the entomological aspect—the identification of the gall-inducing organisms was achieved at varying taxonomic resolutions. Nevertheless, the aim was to reach at least the taxonomic order of the insect in question; in the case of new specimens, the various references cited here were used to determine whether they represented a new species or one that had already been described. In any case, this new inventory brings together most (if not all) of the articles and papers documented regarding the galls described in Chile up to 2026, as well as new records from different localities and host plants. This effort—involving both sampling and the collection of bibliographic data—represents a new opportunity to help bridge the aforementioned information gap.
