Treated sewage effluent from the Sutherland Shire, including low-level effluent from the Lucas Heights Science & Technology Centre (LHSTC), passes through the Cronulla Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and is discharged at Potter Point. Barnacles at Potter Point ocean outfall and a reference site at The Royal National Park were collected. These organisms are known to concentrate a variety of elements, including radionuclides, from their environment. Surf barnacles (mainly Tesseropera rosea) were prepared whole and unwashed. The samples were dried at 60-70 degrees, ground and analysed for gamma-emitting radioisotopes.
