Platycodon grandiflorus, as a Traditional Chinese medicine, containing remarkably amounts of triterpene saponins with broad pharmacological activities. We quantified four saponin monomers in P. grandiflorus, and found the total content of four saponins in the roots was the highest compared with stems and leaves. To further reveal the molecular mechanism of triterpene saponins biosynthesis in P. grandiflorus, combined next-generation sequencing (NGS) and single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing from P. grandiflorus were performed.
