Skeletonema microalgae are notorious for their bloom-forming phenomena. Under certain environmental conditions, they may proliferate exponentially to form harmful algal blooms (HABs). Algae-lysing virus was found to be an important component in aquatic ecosystems, and can play an important role in improving the water quality. The novel virus ScssDNAV infecting and lysing S. costatum. ScssDNAV is spherical. With a diameter of 98±2 nm, ScssDNAV is much bigger than previously reported diatom viruses. It has an unusual single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) genome unlike that of other diatom viruses previously described.
