Scan of the “Auckland Diary” by Ferdinand von Hochstetter (Novara circumnavigation; 8 January to 5 March 1859)

<p>As a member of the scientific commission of the Novara circumnavigation (1857–1859), the naturalist and later director of the k. k. naturhistorisches Hofmuseum Ferdinand von Hochstetter (1829–1884) kept a diary. His stay in New Zealand is documented in five diaries. Thanks to a donation by the Hochstetter family, the first four have been in the possession of the Natural History Museum Vienna since 2016. These New Zealand diaries are first-person documents and field diaries at the same time; they contain scientific records as well as everyday and private observations. His first diary – the so-called “Auckland Diary” – covers the period from 8 January to 5 March 1859.</p>
