VPRS 504 Correspondence Registers

This record series is actually several record series.Unit 1 is a register of outwards correspondence for the period 1887-1891. Entries are arranged numerically. The registration number includes the year and the sequential item of correspondence for that year. In 1887 the year was the prefix; from 1888 it was the suffix. Information recorded includes the date of the correspondence; the registered number for the item of correspondence; and a precis of the item of correspondence. The register then reverted to being both a register of inwards correspondence and a register of outwards correspondence. It covered the period 1891-1893. In relation to inwards correspondence, the register recorded the date received; from whom; number; and contents or particulars of the correspondence. In relation to outwards correspondence, the register recorded the date sent; to whom; the number; and contents or particulars of the correspondence.Units 2-4 functioned as registers of both inwards and outwards correspondence.Unit 5, covering the period 1937-1942, was a correspondence register for the Inspector-General's Office, Penal and Gaols Department. It belongs to VPRS 10851.Unit 6 is a register of inward documents for the period 1938-1943. Information recorded includes the date received; from whom; reference; and the nature of the document. It is arranged chronologically.
