VPRS 1655 Register of Inward and Outward Correspondence, Crown Lands Bailiff Ballarat

This series records the correspondence received by the Crown Lands Bailiff at Ballarat and the actions taken with respect to it. Details given are when correspondence was received, the number under which it had been registered, if previously received at Head Office in Melbourne, from whom it had been received at Head Office, the name of the correspondent and the subject. Notes were made of the instructions issued to the bailiff with respect to the correspondence, the report made by the bailiff, when it was dispatched and to whom. Reports were usually forwarded to the Occupation Branch or to Mr Wimble (then Chief Clerk of the Department of Crown Lands and Survey). The bailiff was requested to report upon inspections made of the land, the value of the improvements made, the basis of objections to occupation and the fulfilment of the conditions of occupation.
