The man, identified as Joseph Newkirk, about 60, raced through the aisle of the plane's first class compartment, waving a switch-blade knife and shouting threats. He was subdued by the pilot of the United Airlines DC-8 Capt. E.J. Kelly of New York and a Camp Pendleton Marine, Pvt. Donald J. Schwalbach, after a 15-minute struggle. Kelly told police here that several women passengers removed their hose for use in binding the hands and feet of the struggling man. They said Newkirk, who they found 'hogtied' and lying face down in the plane's lounge, fought them all the down the ramp and into the waiting police car.
