Gut microbiota-mediated conversion of mangiferin to norathyriol alters short chain fatty acid and urate metabolism

Mangiferin (MAN) is a natural C-glycosylxanthone predominantly found in various plant species, most notably, in the leaves, stems, bark, and fruits of Mangifera indica (mango tree). Although C-glycosides are generally more metabolically stable, evidence suggests that bacterial enzymes, can deglycosylate them. Overall, our study provides new insights into the microbial metabolism of MAN. While MAN itself exhibited limited metabolic effects, its microbial conversion to the aglycone NOR, potentially mediated by specific gut bacteria such as CAKRHR01 sp934339005 and Enterococcus sp900549885, may explain some of the bioactive properties attributed to MAN.
