The eHwalsbyiGI1 clones belong to the clone library described in Legault et al. (2006). Briefly, the sample was collected from the crystallizer pond CR30 in the multi-pond saltern "Bras del Port" located in Santa Pola (Alicante, Spain, 38° 12' N, 0° 36' W) and the DNA corresponding to the >2 μm biomass fraction cloned into fosmids (EpiFOS™ Fosmid Library Production Kit, Epicentre). The fosmid-ends of about 2000 clones were sequencing as described in Legault et al. (2006). This fosmid-end library was screened in order to identify clones whose inserts overlapped GI1 in the genomes of HBSQ001 and C23 strains of Haloquadratum walsbyi. The clones were recovered and 5 micrograms of DNA were extracted for each clone and sent separately for sequencing (Roche 454 GS-FLX system, Titanium chemistry, by GATC, Konstanz, Germany). The inserts were denominated eHwalsbyiGI1_1 to eHwalsbyiGI1_12.
