This proposal aims to investigate the structural and defect-related effects of rare-earth incorporation in a series of RE2Zr2O7 compositions. These compounds represent promising candidates for radioactive waste disposal, as their capacity to dissipate energy via phase transitions is intrinsically linked to defect formation and stability. The study will be conducted through high-resolution powder diffraction, integrating complementary analytical techniques such as Rietveld refinement and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. These methodologies will facilitate the development of a comprehensive structural model applicable across multiple length scales, enabling the identification of the most suitable compositions for advanced testing as nuclear waste immobilization matrices.
