Pumped storage hydropower capacity in the U.S. 2023, by project status

As of May 2023, there were nearly 19 gigawatts worth of licensed pumped storage projects in the U.S. Projects with a capacity amounting to another 7.9 gigawatts were pending lincenses and relicenses at the time, while additions of almost 30 gigawatts had been issued preliminary permits. Pumped storage projects transport water between two reservoirs located at different elevations for electricity storage and generation purposes.
