NRS-12540 | Papers relating to the rehabilitation of tailing dumps and control of pollution from Captains Flat Mine

These papers relate to the State and Federal Governments efforts to control the pollution caused by tailing dumps and seepage from the abandoned Captains Flat Mine. The Molonglo River and Lake Burley Griffin were seriously affected by this pollution (in particular fishing and agriculture along the course of the Molonglo River). A meeting of Federal and State Ministers met in January 1974 and resolved to set up a joint Commonwealth-State Committee to solve the problem. The New South Wales Public Works Department acted as State co-ordinator.
