Calgary's Urban Forest

This study aims to investigate Calgary’s urban forest in order to observe the influence the presence of trees has on air quality, quantify its diversity, and observe the tree age disribution throughout the City. Urban forests provide critical benefits to our society - they reduce our net carbon emissions by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air, reduce overall air pollution, improve water filtration, control stormwater to prevent flooding, promote mental well-being and reduce stress, serve as a habitat for wildlife, provide a sizeable economic value to the city, and they make cities more beautiful and livable. In general, urban forests are a crucial component of any city. Given the tremendous ecological and economic value they provide to society, it is important to analyze and evaluate both the composition of our forests and the effects they have on their surroundings.
