Distinctive phytoplankton communities underlie hotspots of primary production in the mesotrophic ocean

Eastern Boundary Current systems and related transition zones have disproportionate contributions to primary production and fisheries. We focus on the long-noted variability observed in transitions zones, bringing together methodologies ranging from primary production measurements and dilution experiments to phytoplankton diversity profiling, flow cytometry, and species-specific cell enumeration.
