The genome of Methanolobus vulcani B1d was sequenced using Illumina MiSeq technology due to its importance as a model organism for the study of glycine betaine dependent methanogenesis. Ml. vulcani B1d is a mesophilic, strictly methylotrophic methanogen that has the ability to use glycine betaine, trimethylamine, dimethylamine, monomethylamine, and methanol as growth substrates. The genome provides necessary information for analysis of the pathway of methanogenesis from glycine betaine, which can serve as a model for quaternary amine dependent methanogenesis, in general.
