Asanimportantfuturetechnology,nanotechnology1presentsanopportunityforpositivelyinfluencingeconomicdevelopmentinthelongtermthroughintensiveresearchandtheeffectivetranslationoftheresearchresultsintoinnovativeproducts.Inmanyareasitiscurrentlynotpossibletoassessthetoxicologicalandecotoxicologicalrisksassociatedwiththisemergingtechnology.Nanotechnologyisincreasinglyinthepubliceye.Itisexpectedthattheimportanceofnanotechnologywillcontinuetoincreaseandthatworkers,consumersandtheenvironmentwillbeexposedtoanincreasingextent.Hence,thereisaneedtomonitorthedevelopmentofthenewtechnology,toweighuptheopportunitiesandrisksinatransparentprocessandcomparethemwithestablishedtechnologies.
