System- and Physician-Level Determinants of Rural Access to Cancer Clinical Trials in Victoria, Australia

This research explores why people living in rural Victoria, Australia have less access to cancer clinical trials than those living in metropolitan Victoria. While clinical trials offer new treatments, rural cancer patients often face barriers to participation. By reviewing existing studies, analysing data on trial characteristics, and interviewing clinical trial workforce, this thesis shows that trial access is influenced by how trials are organised, where they are located, and whether doctors discuss them with patients. Findings highlight system gaps and suggest ways to improve access, with a view to helping ensure rural patients have more opportunities to participate in cancer clinical trials.
