Sand flies serve as vectors for several established, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases that cause substantial morbidity and mortality in much of the world, including bartonellosis, leishmaniasis and viral infections. In an effort to better understand these arthropod vectors and develop control strategies to combat these diseases, this sequencing project is one of several projects undertaken by The Genome Institute to sequence sandfly species.
