Breast cancer serum ¹H NMR metabolomics (Malaysia)

This study investigates serum metabolomic alterations associated with breast cancer in Malaysian women using ¹H NMR spectroscopy. Fasting serum samples were collected from 60 newly diagnosed, treatment-naïve breast cancer patients and 60 age-matched healthy controls at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, processed under a standardized protocol, and analyzed on a 600 MHz JEOL NMR spectrometer at the Institute for Medical Research (IMR), Kuala Lumpur. Spectra were processed, binned (0.04 ppm bins, 0.50–10.00 ppm, water region excluded), and normalized using probabilistic quotient normalization. Identified metabolites and binned spectral data were used for univariate statistics, multivariate analysis (PCA/OPLS-DA), and machine-learning classification to define a serum metabolomic signature of breast cancer in this Southeast Asian cohort.
