Data from: Bitomský, M., Mládková, P., Cimalová, Š., & Mládek, J. (2019). Herbaceous climbers in herbaceous systems are shade-tolerant and magnesium-demanding. Journal of Vegetation Science
Data summarises the distribution of herbaceous climbers along light availability, disturbance and nutrient availability gradients. In addition, we report trait differences between climbers and co-occurring herbs.
Brief description (see Table 2 in the paper):
Dataset1.txt = 18 herbaceous habitats (Czech Republic; central Europe), n = 12 956, Variables: herb canopy cover, habitat code (described in Table S1), latitude, longitude, vine presence/absence
Dataset2.txt = species-rich grasslands (Beskydy, White Carpathians; Czech Republic), n = 240, Variables: exclosure (long-term management experiment), management (management treatment), soil P, K, Ca, Mg, N, C, C:N, vine presence/absence, total canopy cover
Dataset3.txt = arable fields (north-eastern part of the Czech Republic), n = 231, Variables: vine presence/absence, crop cover, longitude, latitude
Vines_alpha_traits.txt = alpha trait values of vines (sensu Ackerly & Cornwell 2007, Ecology Letters), n = 31, Variables: canopy height (log-transformed), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), seed mass (log-transformed), beginning of flowering, specific leaf area (SLA, log-transformed), bud bank size (BBsum), bud bank depth (BBdepth)
Disturbance_habitats.txt = disturbance parameters of herbaceous habitats (sensu Herben et al. 2016, Journal of Vegetation Science), n = 18, Variables: disturbance return, severity, soil disturbance, percentage number of plots with a vine, total number of plots
