Propionibcateria play a essential role in the ripening of emmental cheese and recent studies have shown the probiotic potential of some strains.The genome sequencing of P.freudenreichii subsp. shermani SANPR8 strain is part of a larger study designed to evaluate its biotechnological and probiotic characteristics and their potential industrial and medical applications. Furthermore the new findings will allow us to develop new genetic and phenotypic tools to perform in-depth studies and extend our knowledge on the metabolism and genetics of this species.
