Following the discontinuation of sugarcane farming in this area in 2002 (the 91st year of the Republic of China), afforestation was carried out in compliance with national government policies. After years of successful afforestation, the densely interwoven trees have formed a vast forest sea, establishing this as a newly emerged scenic spot featuring successful flat-land afforestation within the Hualien-Taitung Longitudinal Valley. The Dafu and Danong afforested plots were selected as one of the three major flat-land forest recreation areas by the Forestry Bureau, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, and officially opened to the public in 2011 (the 100th year of the Republic of China). The area is expansive, open and well-preserved, with a 13-kilometer bicycle path winding through the north-south circular forest trails. Neatly arrayed tree species line both sides of the path, including Taiwan zelkova (Zelkova formosana), Formosan michelia (Michelia formosana), camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora), Griffith's ash (Fraxinus griffithii), Taiwan sweetgum (Liquidambar formosana), Taiwan phoebe (Phoebe formosana), bishop wood (Bischofia javanica), Taiwan oak (Cyclobalanopsis morii), Chinese tallow tree (Triadica sebifera), Taiwan golden rain tree (Koelreuteria elegans subsp. formosana), alongside a diverse array of avian wildlife. Notable avian species include the nationally protected ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus), as well as the Oriental honey-buzzard (Pernis ptilorhynchus), crested serpent eagle (Spilornis cheela), common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), mountain scops owl (Otus spilocephalus), Taiwan hwamei (Garrulax taewanus) and maroon oriole (Oriolus traillii). Medium and large wild mammals present include the Formosan rock macaque (Macaca cyclopis), wild boar (Sus scrofa), Reeves's muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi), among others. The masked palm civet (Paguma larvata) represents the only confirmed population in the Hualien-Taitung region, with an extremely low sighting rate and is in urgent need of conservation efforts. Additionally, the area harbors rich amphibian, reptile and insect communities, with prominent firefly aggregations making it an ideal location for ecological observation. Particularly during the winter Taiwan sweetgum season, yellow and crimson leaves cover the bicycle paths, and occasional encounters with the rare and precious ring-necked pheasant create a picturesque scene of natural wild charm.
