Delta sedimentary evolution: a comprehensive review and perspectives on construction and destruction

The study of constructive–destructive deltas is crucial for exploring and developing oil and gas reservoirs in rocky formations. Current scholarly research has allocated limited attention to the factors governing both the constructive and destructive aspects. This review, from a constructive–destructive perspective, examines various factors influencing the evolution of constructive–destructive deltas since their formation. It dissects the sedimentary evolution of these deltas, quantitatively analyzes the identification factors of the destruction conversion surface of delta construction, explains the significance of research on destructive delta construction for the exploration and development of rocky stratigraphic reservoirs, and summarizes the multidisciplinary background and development dynamics. These approaches deepen our understanding of the process–product relationship, delta formation and evolution dynamics, and resource dynamics. This review advances the vitality of delta studies, advances further research on delta classification, and improves the accuracy of interpreting the deltaic sediment transport and depositional mechanisms. Additionally, it allows for the quantification of depositional group structure, distribution of zones, and stratigraphic sequence of delta sedimentary structures.
