The main aim of this study was to assess the utilization of a methanol-fed UASB as a system for enriching a granular sludge in methanogens and characterise the evolution of the microbial community when shifting from acetate to methanol substrate in terms of composition and activity by the use of quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and sequencing of DNA and RNA.
