EUCROSS examined the relationship between the manifold activities of EU residents (nationals, mobile EU citizens, and third-country nationals) across the borders of nation states and their collective identities.
Topics: 1. Cross-border practices: regions and countries the respondent is familiar with; reasons for this familiarity (work, study, family, partner relationship, friends, leisure, holidays, other); motivation for the decision to settle in the country; ever lived in another country for three or more consecutive months before the respondent turned 18 and countries; year or period the respondent lived in this country; country, and year or period of the longest stay; number of visited countries for journeys abroad; willingness to move back to the country of birth to improve work and living conditions; participation in an international exchange program that has been funded or co-funded by the European Union; own school age children should spend some months in another country; number of trips abroad with at least one overnight stay in the past 24 months; visited countries; main reasons for those trips; percentage of family members, in-laws and friends who are originally from other countries (migrants: from respondent´s country of birth, from the country of residence, from other countries); percentage of family-members, in-laws or friends living outside respondent´s country and origin of those people; frequency of communication with family-members, in-laws or friends living abroad; ways of communication; official language of the country is respondent´s native language; native language; primarily spoken language in the respondent´s household; ever learned other languages beside the native language and the official language in the country; foreign language competence; foreign language the respondent speaks best; percentage of all received private and business related messages which came from abroad; activity in any organisation or group which is oriented towards other countries or cultures; frequency of sending money abroad for reasons other than purchasing good or services; recipient of the money (relationship to the respondent); respondent received money from someone who is living in another country; relationship to those persons; respondent or his partner owns property in the country of residence or in another country; country of property; purchase of good or services from sellers or providers located abroad; place of business of these sellers or providers (country); frequency of following sports in the media; sports on international level or in another country; frequency of receiving TV content in other languages (and not dubbed) than the official country language or the native language; preferred kinds of music; preferred foreign cuisine; life satisfaction.
2. European identification and cosmopolitan values: identification as a citizen of the town of residence, of the region, of the country, European, of the world); identity: (regional only, regional and European, European and regional, European only, country of birth, etc.); association with the term Europe (the European continent, the European Union, a shared European culture and history, the Christian Religion, none of these); voted in the last elections of the European Parliament in June 2009 (not included in the Turkish questionnaire) and in the last general elections in the country; perception of the flag of the European Union or an image of the flag during the last seven days, and occasion (e.g. flag as such, Pictogram on passport, ID cards, on drivers licenses, etc.; left-right self-placement; it is a good thing of a society to be made up of people from different ethnic groups, religions and cultures; increased exposure to foreign films, music, and books is damaging national and local cultures; importance of different aims of the European Union (solidarity between the peoples in the EU, democracy and human rights in the single EU countries, economic stability in the single EU countries, the right to work in any country of the EU, a common currency); the EU should not continue to accept new member states; EU institutions should transfer some of their decision-making power Back to the member states; opinion on the admittance of several countries to the European Union (Turkey, Croatia, Ukraine, Norway, and in retrospect: Finland, Greece, Poland and Bulgaria); financial contributions in the case of a natural disaster of another country´s relevant administrative district or region (only the respective country´s relevant administrative district or region vs. the country as a whole); financial contributions in the case of a natural disaster of another member state of the European Union (only the respective country vs. all member states of the European Union); opinion on national state funds to help EU countries having difficulties in paying their debts; opinion in the case of the European Union´s dissolving (sorry, indifferent, relieved).
Migrants additionally: self-assessment of language skills at the time of immigration and now; experienced discrimination because of birth in another country.
Demography: sex; age (year of birth); citizenships; country of birth; year of settlement; marital status; partner; partner lives in the survey country; partner´s country of residence; highest level of education; employment status or current situation; ever had a paid job; main job; name or title of main job; frequency of interaction with people (e.g. business partners, clients, colleagues) who are located in another country, national citizenship of father and mother at their birth; parents´ highest level of education; when the respondent was 14 years old: father or mother contributed financially the most to the household income; father/mother was an employee, self-employed or not working; name or title of father/mother; financial situation of the household when the respondent was 14 years old; partner: sex of respondent´s partner; start year of the relationship with the partner; national citizenship of partner at his/her birth; partner´s highest level of education; employment status or current situation of partner; partner ever had a paid job; partner is/was an employee, self-employed or working for his/her family business; name or title of partner´s main job; current financial situation of the household.
Additionally coded was: respondent ID number; International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO 2008); International Socio-economic Index of Occupational Status (ISEI, according to Ganzeboom); sample group.
