one male specimen Nothobranchius furzeri is a teleost fish with very short life span. In captivity, the maximum life span of strain MZM-0403 is about 31 weeks. There are other strains which differ remarkably in life span, e.g. the GRZ strain has a maximum life span which is about half that of MZM-0403. We have set out for an initial characterization of the genome of this species to support establishing it as an alternative model organism for aging research.
