Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) the shrimp microsporidian is the causative agent of the disease Hepatopancreatic microsporidiosis. The EHP was reported to cause significant economic losses in shrimp farming in south East Asian countries. EHP did not cause mass mortality but led to severe growth retardation and size variation in shrimps. The production loss in Indian shrimp farms due to EHP infection was reported to be 0.77 million tonnes, with a revenue loss of $567.62 million. The target organ for this microsporidian is the shrimp hepatopancreas. As the hepatopancreas is the important digestive gland of shrimp, the EHP infection in shrimp hepatopancreas affects secretion, digestion, and absorption. These repercussions affect the metabolism and cause growth retardation and production losses.
