Twenty pollen samples were removed from cores collected in the Ka-mo'omaika'i
Fishpond located in Hanalei on the island of Kaua'i. The water is
primarily fresh, as the pond is fed by two streams, although Tsunami have
inundated this area several times. The fishpond has not been vised since 1940 and
has silted in and overgrown with California grass (Brachiaria mutica), bullrush
(Scirpus validus), and a native sedge (Cladium leptostachyum). Pollen analysis
was undertaken to establish vegetation in the vicinity of this fishpond during
its use prior to 1940.
