LANDMATE PFTs for Germany and Global Vegetation Background Dataset

This dataset is required for testing the land use translator, https://github.com/climate-service-center/land-use-translator

Global background files at a 0.1° (~10km) resolution. These files are used for cases, where a certain vegetation class is not present within a grid cell but should be increased according to the LUH2 and the rules provided by the LUT. These are maps for potential land cover for the vegetation classes forest (FOR), grass (GRA), shrubs (SHR), cropland (CRO), and the urban class (URB). They include the fraction of the respective Plant Functional Types (PFTs) assigned based on the Holdrige life zone classification using the CRUTS dataset. A detailed description of the methodology is provided by Hoffmann et al. (2023).

PFTS_reg01.nc provides a land cover time series for Germany for the years 1992-2015 in 0.1° (~10km) resolution, which was extracted from the LANDMATE PFT land cover dataset for Europe 1992-2015 (Version 1.1) (https://doi.org/10.26050/WDCC/LM_PFT_EUR_v1.1).  A detailed describtion of the dataset LANDMATE PFT dataset is provided by Reinhart et al. (2022). The file contains data for 14 Plant Functional Types (PFTs) and 2 non-vegetated land cover classes (bare ground and urban), providing detailed vegetation characterization.
