ThisNIOSHCIB,(1)reviewstheanimalandothertoxicologicaldatarelevanttoassessingthepotentialnon-malignantadverserespiratoryeffectsofCNTandCNF,(2)providesaquantitativeriskassessmentbasedonanimaldose-responsedata,(3)proposesarecommendedexposurelimit(REL)of1μg/m3elementalcarbonasarespirablemass8-hourtime-weightedaverage(TWA)concentration,and(4)describesstrategiesforcontrollingworkplaceexposuresandimplementingamedicalsurveillanceprogram.TheNIOSHRELisexpectedtoreducetheriskforpulmonaryinflammationandfibrosis.However,becauseofsomeresidualriskattheRELanduncertaintyconcerningchronichealtheffects,includingwhethersometypesofCNTsmaybecarcinogenic,continuedeffortsshouldbemadetoreduceexposuresasmuchaspossible.
