Factory Geographies

Relational database describing the location and production of factories registered in the 1887 factory census compiled by the Department of Trade and Manufacture within the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Empire. The census, or index, includes only factories that produced 2,000 rubles (or more) on an annual basis. The data in the 1887 publication describes factory activity in 1884. It identifies 1) factory owners by name and social status, 2) factory locations by town and (sometimes) street, 3) weight (poods) and value (rubles) produced on annual basis, 4) number of workers, 5) number of steam engines and mechanized parts, 6) the type and quantity of confection. Files published April 22, 2025 capture the data in the subsection on Confections. This is but one small piece of a substantial primary source. We hope to continue this project pending availability of funds and staff.
