This research unveils the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of dust emissions from desertified lands during the process of land desertification, and makes a comparative analysis with dust emissions from Gobi surfaces. Wind tunnel experiments reveal the dust emission capacities of desertified lands and Gobi surfaces for dust particles of different sizes, proving that the dust emission capacity of desertified lands is higher than that of Gobi surfaces, and the dust emission rate of Gobi surfaces has increased post-2000. Compared with the levels in the 1970s, the PM50 emissions from desertified lands and Gobi surfaces post-2000 decreased by 75% and 71%, respectively. The findings indicate that since the 1970s, both the potential dust source areas and dust emission intensities in northern China have undergone significant spatiotemporal changes.
