VPRS 15139 Rate Cards

These cards are also called Rates, Charges and Valuation Sheets. The sheets contain descriptions of each property, and information about property owners, ratepayers, valuations, rates and other charges over a period of years. The sheets contain full records up to 1958/59, although some preliminary notes may be found relating to 1959/60.The series chiefly comprises two sets of sheets, each covering a period of years: 1950/51-1955/56 and 1956/57-1958/59. Within each set, the sheets are grouped by riding, and organised numerically by assessment number. The numbers continue from one riding to the next. Assessment numbers were subject to change from year to year, so the cards in each set are filed under the most recent assessment number.The numerical order also corresponds to a rough arrangement by street address. The street names are not alphabetical, but probably follow a geographical order within the suburb, eg records of intersecting streets may be filed close to one another.On each sheet, the valuation and rate records are organised chronologically by financial year (1 October - 30 September).The series includes cancelled cards that are not part of the main numerical sequence. Cards were cancelled for various reasons, eg resubdivision of a property, or write-off of rates if a property had been rated twice.The series also includes a set of cards labelled 'Supps. All Ridings', which appears to cover supplementary valuations and related rates and charges for 1958/59 only.Note: The cards were originally attached together in volumes with metal fasteners. During processing of the records for transfer to the Public Record Office Victoria [PROV], volumes with hard covers have been left as they were, while volumes without covers have been dismantled and the cards filed in acid free folders supplied by the PROV (the cards from one volume may now be divided into one or more acid free folders).
