Platform-level Telemetry Traffic in Meta VR

Overview This dataset contains platform-level telemetry traffic collected from Meta Quest devices under controlled experimental conditions. It consists of two main datasets: VR app dataset: telemetry traces collected while running VR applications Virtual world dataset: telemetry traces collected from VRChat worlds These datasets are designed to support research on traffic analysis, encrypted traffic inference, and privacy risks in VR platforms. Dataset Structure Due to storage limitations, only a subset of the dataset is released. A random sample of 30 pcap files per application or world is included Each application's traces are compressed into: <app-name>.zip VRChat world traces are aggregated into: vrchat-worlds.zip Collection Summary Devices: Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro (multiple units across two environments) Tools: adb, tcpdump, automated shell scripts Capture Duration: 180 seconds per session Collection Periods: VR app data from April–September 2024; VRChat world data from March–May 2025 Dataset Size: 84,492 pcap files (≈ 600 GB) for VR apps + 15,228 pcap files (≈ 120 GB) for VRChat worlds Data Characteristics Metadata: Each file labeled with app or world name, device ID (1-8), headset model (Quest 2, 3, or Pro), and timestamp Data Filtering: Only platform-level traffic exchanged with Meta's infrastructure (AS32934) is included. Local network setup packets (e.g., DHCP) are removed. Corrupted or incomplete sessions are excluded. Ethical and Privacy Considerations All devices were configured with privacy settings enabled and data sharing disabled No user-generated content or application payloads were inspected All traffic remains encrypted, and only metadata (e.g., packet size, timing) is used VRChat data was collected exclusively in private world instances to avoid interaction with public users
