Bota-Espera Following the Porto Alegre Floods, Brazil: Dataset on Installation Sites and Duration

This dataset documents the installation of Bota-Espera (temporary garbage-disposal site) following the 2024 floods in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Official Data Acquisition via Brazilian Transparency LawThe data regarding the sites and duration of where the bota-esperas were installed and was obtained from the Departamento Municipal de Limpeza Urbana (DMLU, Municipal Department of Urban Cleaning) of Porto Alegre through a formal request under Brazil’s Law of Access to Information (Lei de Acesso à Informação - LAI, Law nº 12.527/2011). This legal framework guarantees citizens’ right to access public information. DMLU provided official records of Bota-Espera installations, including dates, locations, and site identifiers. Data Organization and EnhancementThe raw data was structured into a coherent table format with standardized dates and calculated installation durations. To add socioeconomic context, neighborhood-level demographic data (including racial composition and income levels) was appended from publicly available IBGE census statistics (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística, Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). Geospatial Verification and MappingTo ensure location accuracy and support visual analysis: Google Street View was used to confirm exact installation sites and document street conditions. Adobe Photoshop was employed to create annotated maps, visually documenting Bota-Espera installations and their positions within neighborhood contexts. This dataset provides a detailed, verified account of Bota-Espera deployment, supporting research on post-flood infrastructure, urban planning, and social equity in Porto Alegre.
