The Central Roads Board, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744).The correspondence contained in the letter-press books in this series was not registered or indexed. It consists of memoranda regarding costs and contracts for construction and maintenance of roads and bridges which may have been partially designed as cover sheets for other forwarded papers. Also included are copies of Minutes being sent for information purposes and some more substantive matters such as letters of appointment and answers formulated to Parliamentary Questions.
