This dataset contains two CSV files, both licensed under CC BY 4.0 and assigned a DOI via Zenodo. The first file, species-light-levels.csv, lists the light requirement levels of all indoor plant species in the GrowSpot care library, with one row per species, including common_name, scientific_name, and light_requirement (categorized as low, medium, high, very_high, roughly corresponding to 270–800 lux, 800–1,600 lux, 1,600–10,800 lux, and 10,800+ lux, respectively). The second file, indoor-light-measurements.csv, provides aggregated illuminance readings collected by people when placing plants in their homes, grouped by measurement location (indoor, balcony, outdoor, not recorded), including sample count, quartiles, and histograms divided into five intervals. Note: This file only provides aggregated data, no individual readings, precise locations, or timestamps. The dataset background aims to illustrate that indoor is not a single light level and to quantify the disagreement among different definitions of bright indirect light. For example, indoor readings median range is 420–6,200 lux, about 31% of samples are below 800 lux (i.e., below the lower limit of the lowest category); different sources define the minimum of bright indirect light from 1,000 lux to 10,764 lux, causing 43% of indoor readings to fall in the ambiguous zone. The dataset explicitly states its limitations: categories are conventions rather than precise measurements, and boundaries may vary slightly across references; readings come from user-selected plant locations, not random sampling, thus representing candidate locations rather than room surveys; measurement tools are phone light meters with limited accuracy; the outdoor group has only n=3, for reference only. This dataset can be used for training plant light requirement classification models, analyzing indoor light distribution, and verifying the consistency of different horticultural light standards.

关键发现与洞察
- 室内光照差异显著:室内读数的中间一半范围在 420 至 6,200 lux 之间;在 49 个室内读数中,有 15 个低于 800 lux,处于除最低等级外所有等级的下限以下。
- “明亮间接光”定义存在分歧:将室内读数按不同来源给出的“明亮间接光”标准下限(最低 1,000 lux,最高 1,000 fc,即 10,764 lux)排序,结果显示:
- 17 个读数低于所有标准下限;
- 21 个读数介于两个标准之间;
- 11 个读数达到或超过所有标准上限。

- 户外数据仅含 3 个样本(n=3),仅供完整性参考。
