The Future Wind Energy Climate dataset provides a global, high-resolution (0.1°) view of projected changes in surface wind speed and temperature from 1981 to 2100. It is designed to support long-term planning and risk assessment for the renewable energy sector, with a focus on wind power production potential.
The dataset includes two key climate variables relevant to wind energy operations:
- Near-Surface Wind Speed (10 m): Annual average and interannual variability of daily wind speed, critical for estimating wind power potential and assessing long-term yield stability.
- Near-Surface Air Temperature (2 m): Annual average temperature, used to evaluate turbine performance efficiency, thermal derating risks, and impacts on surrounding infrastructure.
These variables are derived from up to 35 widely global climate models and available under three IPCC emissions scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP5-8.5), enabling consistent analysis across a range of possible climate futures.
The dataset captures both gradual trends and variability in wind and thermal conditions, helping public and private-sector actors in wind energy development, grid planning, and asset valuation to anticipate future risks and opportunities. Applications include resource assessment for new sites, performance modeling, insurance evaluation, and long-term strategic planning for infrastructure and grid integration.
Data are delivered in NetCDF format, with CSV or GeoTIFF versions available on request.
