Mixed gametocytes (both male and female sexual stages) of the apicomplexan parasite Eimeria tenella were analysed by RNA Seq (HiSeq 200 Sequencing System, Illumina) in parallel with two reference asexual stages, merozoites and sporozoites. Differential expression analysis between samples reveals hundreds of upregulated gametocyte transcripts, many of which encode proteins involved in fertilisation and subsequent parasite transmission.
