The discipline of political science has struggled to recruit, mentor, and retain significant numbers of women and underrepresented minorities. Encouragingly, many individuals and institutions have developed innovative programs and sought to create structural changes to increase our discipline’s diversity and inclusivity. This piece discusses an exciting new “pipeline program” aimed at diversifying the student body in the discipline’s doctoral programs. We describe the program’s contours, structure, personnel, and content; consider the lessons we learned from developing and managing it, and offer preliminary data on outcomes. We emphasize the need for more members of the discipline to incrementally develop bold and creative initiatives, identifying the opportunities, capitalizing on the advantages, and confronting the constraints that their context presents. We highlight the importance of achieving clarity on the success parameters, and securing institutional backing, for such efforts; of public and private funders supporting them; and of coordination and collaboration among those who bring them to life.
