Soil fungi link above and belowground carbon and nutrient fluxes. Hardwood forest plots in the Midwestern USA which differed in their abundance of arbuscular- vs. ectomycorrhizal- associated trees were used to investigate how soil fungal (Dikarya) communities relate to activity across three mycorrhizal gradients. Soil fungal community composition (in 0-5 cm and 5-15 cm soil depth), hyphal production and turnover rates using ingrowth mesh bags, and enzyme activities were analysed.
