Outcomes of second-line protease inhibitor based treatment for HIV-1 in a high prevalence rural South African setting

Second-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) based on ritonavir-boosted protease inhibitors (bPI) represents the only available option after first-line failure for the majority of individuals living with HIV worldwide. Maximizing their effectiveness is imperative. In this study, near-full length deep sequencing was performed at time of 1st-line and 2nd-line failure in 9 participants that were enrolled within the ANRS 12249 Treatment as Prevention trial.
